Bio/Webpage (English, Outdated)
Born
in May 26, 1955 in Hiroshima prefecture and married to Keiko, Iron Chef
Japanese Morimoto Masaharu trained in a sushi restaurant before moving
to the U.S. in 1985 at the age of 30. After working in several restaurants,
he joined the highly acclaimed Nobu restaurant in New York City, and
is currently its head chef.
Morimoto
polished his craft in New York's melting pot and became a state-of-the-art
world chef. His cutting-edge cuisine attracted the attention of Iron
Chef's producers, who invited him to become a Japanese Iron Chef. His
skill, which outshines the trademark diamond stud in his left ear, has
been recognized all around the world. While his cooking has Japanese
roots, it's actually "global cooking" for the 21st century.
His unique fusion cuisine takes advantage of Japanese color combinations
and aromas and uses Chinese spices and simple Italian ingredients, while
maintaining a refined French style of presentation.
"Cooking is
entertainment," proclaims this revolutionary. Morimoto's attitude
is evident in his dishes, which retain a sense of fun and a bit of spice.
Morimoto
is the third Japanese Iron Chef. Known as the "Silver Iron Chef",
his debut battle was aired in Japan on 2/27/98. Morimoto is different
than previous Japanese Iron Chefs since he's spent most of his culinary
career in the United States and experiments with fusion cuisine. Because
of Morimoto's US connection, there's an American flag on the back of
Morimoto's outfit.
When Iron
Chef was being taped, Morimoto was the head chef at Nobu in New York
City. In November 2000, Morimoto left Nobu and opened his own place
in Philadelphia, PA: Morimoto. He has since opened a restaurant in Bombay,
and as of December 2005 will open a restaurant in NYC, just blocks from
his former employer.
Chef Morimoto
sports an earring, which is unusual for the Japanese. He originally
started out playing baseball, but after an injury, turned to cooking
instead. He came to New York about 15 years ago and has been living
here ever since. At first, they made a big deal about how Morimoto would
drink Coca-Cola in the Kitchen Stadium. Chef Morimoto's own cooking
style is more fusion as he often combines non-Japanese elements into
his food. It's this "edginess" that led the producers to select
him as the next Japanese Iron Chef.
